Transforming tool rental shops with SafeRent
How a village tool rental shop stopped losing machines to repeat offenders, and got its stock and accounts in order along the way.
Siva runs a power tool rental shop in a village in Kerala. Steady customers, steady demand — and, for years, a steady drain on the business he could not stop.
The problem was never the paperwork
He had hundreds of tools to keep track of, bookings to coordinate, and returns to chase. That was tiring, but it was survivable.
What was not survivable was the theft. Machines went out and never came back. Others came back destroyed. Each loss was more than the price of the tool: it was the weeks spent tracing the person, the phone calls, the arguments, and often the discovery — too late — that the same customer had already done this to two other shops nearby.
That last part is the detail that matters. Habitual offenders move from shop to shop precisely because no shop knows what happened at the last one. Every new counter is a clean slate.
Checking a customer before the machine leaves
Siva started using SafeRent, an app built for rental shops by someone who grew up in one.
The day-to-day is ordinary enough: his tools live in a stock register, bookings and due dates are tracked, and rent is calculated for him however long a job runs. No computer, no training, no installation.
The part that changed his business is what happens at the counter. When a customer comes in, Siva takes their photo in the app. SafeRent checks that face against customers already reported by other shops on the network — and warns him, on the spot, before the machine leaves.
Prevention instead of pursuit. The risky handover simply does not happen.
What changed
The losses stopped. Within months Siva saw a sharp drop in fraudulent rentals. When the app flags someone, he can ask for additional verification, or decline — a decision that used to be guesswork and is now informed.
The shop got legible. He can answer a question he previously could not: do I have a spare one of these to rent out today? Stock, rentals and overdue items are one live list rather than one man’s memory.
The accounts got real. Rent collected in cash, part payments, tools still out — the month-end position stopped being an estimate.
Buying got smarter. Reports show which tools people keep asking for, so capital goes into machines that earn rather than machines that sit.
Why it works better the more shops join
SafeRent’s fraud network is only as strong as the shops in it. Every shop that reports a bad customer protects every other shop in the district — which is why it spread the way it did, shop telling shop, from three shops in 2023 to more than 550 across Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Siva’s business today looks nothing like the manual, error-prone operation it was. He is expanding, and the thing that used to keep him up at night is largely solved.
